Wedding Music Tips from Charleston DJ Taylor

When couples start planning their wedding, they often focus on the big visual details like the venue, flowers, or the dress. But one of the most memorable parts of any wedding for guests is the music. The right DJ can completely transform the atmosphere, turning a nice reception into an unforgettable celebration.

We recently spoke with DJ Taylor of DJs of Charleston for some insider tips on planning wedding music. With experience ranging from nightclubs and celebrity events to destination weddings, Taylor has built a reputation for keeping dance floors packed with high-energy sets and well-timed song selections.

Here are some of his best tips for creating a reception your guests will remember long after the night ends.

Start Thinking About Music Early

Many couples wait until the final weeks before their wedding to think about music, but starting earlier can make the process much easier and more fun.

Some DJs provide couples with planning tools or apps where they can begin adding songs as soon as they book. This allows couples to gradually build a list of songs they love throughout their engagement, and sometimes even lets guests submit suggestions as well.

You don’t need to plan every song in advance, but keeping a running list can help your DJ understand the vibe you’re hoping to create for the reception.

Don’t Overthink the Playlist

A common misconception is that wedding DJs simply follow a strict playlist from start to finish. In reality, experienced DJs constantly adjust their music choices based on the energy of the room and how guests are responding.

Taylor encourages couples to share their favorite songs and genres but still give their DJ room to read the crowd and adapt.

“We aren’t Spotify DJs,” he says. “We’re artists. Once we understand what a couple likes, that becomes the sandbox we play in.”

Remember Your Guests

While your wedding day is centered around you as a couple, it’s also a celebration with family and friends of all ages. The most successful dance floors usually include a mix of music that different generations can enjoy.

Songs from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s often work well because they bring a sense of nostalgia that connects people across age groups. When guests hear music they recognize, they’re more likely to join the dance floor and keep the party going.

Keep Your “Do Not Play” List Short

It’s perfectly normal to have a few songs you absolutely don’t want played at your wedding — whether they feel overused or just don’t match your style.

Taylor recommends keeping that list fairly small so your DJ still has flexibility to read the room and keep the energy up.

“I love a do-not-play list,” he says. “But doing a hundred songs is not recommended. Three to ten songs is perfect.”

The Flow of the Night Matters

Wedding DJs do much more than run the dance floor. They often help guide the overall flow of the evening, from the ceremony and cocktail hour to dinner and the reception.

Smooth transitions between these moments help the event feel polished and keep guests engaged throughout the night. When the earlier parts of the event run well, it naturally builds anticipation for the party later on.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Different

Many couples search for “top wedding songs” when planning their music. While those lists can be helpful starting points, relying on them too heavily can make weddings feel predictable.

Taylor encourages couples to personalize their playlists and choose songs that reflect their personalities and memories.

“Be unique and have fun with it,” he says. “If you just pick from the top wedding songs list, it can end up feeling a little boring.”

A Growing Wedding Music Trend

One trend that’s becoming more popular is DJs performing alongside live musicians during the reception. Some couples are incorporating saxophone players or other instrumentalists who join the DJ during the dance portion of the night.

This type of collaboration combines the energy of a DJ set with the excitement of a live performance, creating a more dynamic atmosphere for guests.

The Right DJ Makes a Big Difference

At the end of the day, the DJ plays a major role in shaping the overall experience of a wedding reception. The right music keeps the energy high, helps the evening flow smoothly, and brings people together on the dance floor.

As Taylor puts it, “The dance floor is what people remember.” When the music is right, that’s exactly where everyone will want to be.
