You don’t need to plan every song in advance, but keeping a running list can help your DJ understand the vibe you’re hoping to create for the reception.

Don’t Overthink the Playlist

A common misconception is that wedding DJs simply follow a strict playlist from start to finish. In reality, experienced DJs constantly adjust their music choices based on the energy of the room and how guests are responding.

Taylor encourages couples to share their favorite songs and genres but still give their DJ room to read the crowd and adapt.

“We aren’t Spotify DJs,” he says. “We’re artists. Once we understand what a couple likes, that becomes the sandbox we play in.”

Taylor recommends keeping that list fairly small so your DJ still has flexibility to read the room and keep the energy up.

“I love a do-not-play list,” he says. “But doing a hundred songs is not recommended. Three to ten songs is perfect.”

Wedding DJs do much more than run the dance floor. They often help guide the overall flow of the evening, from the ceremony and cocktail hour to dinner and the reception.

“Be unique and have fun with it,” he says. “If you just pick from the top wedding songs list, it can end up feeling a little boring.”
